Some years ago I'm pretty sure I saw an entry in one of those Directories - maybe 1905 or 1906 -for my grandfather, James McConville, Motorman.
I've since found out that Motorman referred to a Driver of one of the new Electric Trams which came into service at the start of 1905.
Prior to that my grandfather had been listed as a Van Driver in the 1901 census. By the time of the 1911 census he was listed as a Bread Server (he was still listed as such on his death Certificate in 1924). One of Barney Hughes' foot soldiers.
In between those years he ran a Laundry in Barrack Street for a couple of years which is recorded in the Directories from 1907 until 1910.
Maybe PRONI or the Linenhall Library might have a copy of the Directories for those elusive years. I'll try them just in case.
